In 2019, Austin Community College was awarded a $7.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education program to create the National Biotechnology Education Center–InnovATEBIO–with partners in New York, California, Washington, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. The Center is addressing the rapidly growing need for highly skilled technicians by consolidating several biotech education projects into a national network to share best practices and expand research opportunities for students at two-year institutions. Along with InnovATEBio, the biotech project Skills for Biomedical Emerging Technology Applications (BETA Skills)—awarded to Forsyth Technical Community College by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program—is providing North Carolina faculty several opportunities for professional development.
The InnovATEBIO Bioscience Leadership Institute is designed for promising community college faculty, administrators, and high school bioscience instructors. A series of events will take place via virtual discussion and interviews with industry, workforce and academic leaders beginning in June 2021 and will end with an onsite session in June 2022. Return the online application and three reference letters by March 15, 2021 for consideration.
The BETA Skills ATE project will be holding two professional development courses in June.
